Maxim tells of his healthy weight gain

When I was 18, I suddenly noticed that I became very tired easily. It was very strange, as I had more than a normal rest: 16 hours out of 24. I couldn’t imagine what was wrong.
Then I got on a scale and saw that my weight had dropped from 65 to 60 kg. My first thought was, “I don’t eat enough, that’s why I am tired”. When I lost weight, I was very depressed: I didn’t want to go out, I was easily irritated, was nervous all the time and devoured a lot of food.
But my weight continued to drop. In 18 months I went from 63 to 52 kg (and my height is 170 cm). It was awful! I looked like a ghost. I was permanently sleepy and during the first part of the day could never concentrate. Even a small gust of wind blew me away like a balloon. I could not find a job: my looks made people shy away from me.

What our bodies need to work properly

Herbalife and children’s charity NCH join forces

London Leading children’s charity NCH has partnered with wellness experts Herbalife to establish a pilot programme in the UK designed to educate young carers about the importance of good nutrition, wellness foods and healthy eating.
Herbalife is funding a nutrition plan that will give young carers in the Hackney area of East London access to regular cooked meals as well as education and advice about shopping for food, cooking and nutrition.
Acknowledging the vital role good nutrition can play in the lives of these young carers, Herbalife, one of the world’s leading providers of healthy living products, has teamed up with NCH to establish a Healthy Eating Project for young carers at NCH’s Hackney Young Carers. The project will provide healthy cooked meals for the children on a regular basis, as well as giving them advice on the kind of foods and meals they can prepare simply at home.
Vera Beining, project manager at NCH’s Hackney Young Carers said: “Our young carers have so much responsibility and so much to accomplish in a day that food shopping and cooking is often not a high priority. They also don’t know much about nutrition so their diet and the family diet can be very poor. This combined with lack of exercise, can also lead to problems with weight.
“This project is practical in that it will provide good, nutritious food for these youngsters. It is also educational and social. Young carers can mix with others in a similar situation and get away from their day-to-day pressures for a while. It allows them to be children and make new friends.”
Hackney is one of the most deprived boroughs in London and NCH’s Hackney Young Carers Centre was established in 1998. There are currently 150 young carers aged between 5-18 years of age who attend the project.
It is estimated there are currently 175,000 young carers in the UK. These are children and young people under the age of 18 who care for a member of their family or household. That person may have a physical illness, a physical or learning disability, a mental health problem, be elderly and frail, or be suffering from drug or alcohol misuse. Young carers take on enormous responsibility, often forsaking their own childhood and schooling in order to do so. Although they have some state support they are, in effect, the head of the family, responsible for all the main caring functions within the family unit.

Few take steps to Control Weight

Though half of Americans say they're trying to control their weight, only 23% are taking 2 important steps to getting there: watching what they eat AND getting exercise.
Experts recommend:
reducing calorie intake
60 mins of vigorous exercise on most days of the week.

However, data on 4,300 adults from the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that:
51% say they tried to either lose or maintain their weight in the previous 12 months.
74% of those who are trying to lose say they ate less food or switched to lower-calorie foods.
Exercise for those trying to maintain weight was 180 mins.
but for those trying to lose weight was 135 mins a week of physical activity.

First calorie intake must be reduced to 1000-1500 cals / day to reduce weight,

A word of warning to anyone thinking of taking drastic action to lose weight.....

It's already known that gastric bypass and other bariatric surgeries for weight loss carry deadly risks, but what was perhaps not known was just how common these risks were.
A new US government report has found that for bariatric surgeries:
22% of patients in hospital had complications
but 44% of discharged patients had complications during the 1st 6 months
.
That means that 4 in 10 people who have the surgery develop complications.
Among the most common complications were:
Dumping syndrome, which involves vomiting, reflux and diarrhea
Complications resulting from the surgical joining of the intestine and stomach
Abdominal hernias
Infections and pneumonia
A patient with complications not only has to deal with the health issues, but also the costs. Costs averaged $36,542 for obesity surgery patients who had complications in the six months after surgery, and for those who had to be readmitted to the hospital as a result, costs averaged over $65,000.
Needless to say, I am not an advocate of this procedure, especially considering that far more effective, less expensive healthy
weight loss programmes options that exist .
